In October 2023 I was contacted to oversee the production of the media elements of the 2023 Fire Show for Carlisle Council. I managed a group of 12 individuals to create an accompanying soundscape for a narration on 'Cumberland'. I had regular meetings with the team to discuss progression on the project and provided support where it was needed to ensure that a high quality product was produced.
This project tested my team management skills as there was severe conflict between multiple members of the team, which I had to work through with them to ensure collaboration between them.

I wasn't happy with the previous edit of Poachers due to the fact that the sound on the film was not great. I spent about 4/5 weeks creating a soundscape from scratch. I learnt about audio stems and creating a mix to create high quality sound for my film. For my Final Major Project for University, I was producer and sound operator on 'Distance'. Distance is a 12 minute film that follows the changes young couple Theo and his girlfriend Emily undergo due to Theo's Dad's health issues and Emily moving away to pursue her dream job I enjoyed working on this film as it was different to any of the films I have done in the past as I got to work on a film that is emotionally driven. As a producer I had to approach this film differently as a lot of the film is in simultaneous split screen, which is something I have never worked with before. I also made the text graphics for the film which has helped me improve my editing skills due to the fact that I had no experience making any animation or graphics - by the end of the project I was able to make high quality moving text graphics. Link to the film: This week I assisted the University of Cumbria in a project with Barrow Primary School. The project involved interviewing some pupils about their fondest memories of the environment, their expectations and their wishes about the surrounding environment in the future. I recorded audio for the project and also assisted with some of the interviews.
This was a great experience as I was able to be part of a professional project with real clients and I gained experience working in the industry. In October 2022, the second year film students were asked to create a 12-15 minute video about Hadrian for the Carlisle Fire Show 2022. I was brought in by one of my lecturers to oversee production from the universities’ side to make sure the video was delivered on time and of a high quality.
I was in charge of a team of 15, and I assisted them with: Idea pitching / research / shoots / editing / feedback with client / filming the event on the day. I worked closely with all parties involved to ensure the video we would be distributing was to the correct standard. This was my first time as a producer for an event, which was seen by 40,000 people, and this was the first time I was able to use my skills as a producer in an external project. Link to show: P1011260.MOV (show starts at 14:10) In November 2022, I was Producer for my first solo film ‘Poachers’. For this project I experimented with a fight sequence, which I had never done before. This was also the first time I edited a film. From this project I was able to develop lots of skills as it was my first time in various roles within production. For example I was in charge of: Writing, Locations, Cast, Crew, Rehearsals, Shoot Days and editing. I am now much more confident in the role of a Director and Editor from this project. Link to the production process: Matthew Athroll Minor Project.pdf In November / December 2022 I was a producer on another Christmas Project for the University of Cumbria.
This was a campus wide project spanning from Lancaster, Ambleside, Fusehill Street, Brampton Road and London. This project involved many different staff members reciting lines to the ’12 days of Christmas’, which would be edited together to create the song and then distributed across the University campuses. We only had a couple of weeks to put this together as the video had to be ready before the Christmas Holidays. We had a 3 day shoot for this project. My main roles on this project were to: arrange locations, work with participants, create sets, work with the choir and sound operating where necessary. Link to the video: 12 Days of Christmas (Master).mp4 From past projects and experiences, I have decided that in the future I would like to become a Freelance Producer for films.
From previous research and the projects I have been apart of, I like the roles and responsibilities that a producer would have. Some of these responsibilities include: developing concepts, accumulating and budgeting funds for productions, guiding crew members within pre-production, production and post-production. A producer role appeals to me because I enjoy jobs that involve planning and structure to ensure the development of an idea or project. From the projects that I have been involved in, I have significantly improved many skills. For example, from my role as producer and camera operator, I have developed my verbal communication, written communication, planning / organisation and teamwork. These skills will help me in my future role as a producer because these skills are vital for a successful production. After finishing working on Blake Moore, I will look for more opportunities to promote myself as a producer and look for more opportunities to be on film sets. In May 2022, I was a producer on a TV show called ‘The Cumbrian Morning. This was a University project and was my second major role as a producer. Like with the short film, I was in charge of overseeing the entire production, creating schedules, call sheets, risk assessments, finding and getting permission for locations, casting, creating and sourcing props, making set plans, sourcing costumes and getting equipment in order to film. Across the project, I have learned the role and responsibilities of a producer throughout the production of a TV show, and how this is integral to create a high quality TV show. I have also learned how to create and format documentation for a TV Show at a high level. Also, I have further improved my management of talent and crew on and off the set. I found out from this project that I prefer producing shot films rather than TV shows. After my work on 'Cross the Line', I have been offered the role of producer on an upcoming film 'Blake Moore'.
This is a film that follows the protagonist 'Blake Moore' as he tries to enact revenge upon his wife's killer. This film is a very good opportunity for me as it is external to the University, meaning I will have the opportunities to make connections with a wide range of existing personnel within the media industry. This film will also be a great opportunity as I will be able to challenge myself as I will not have the 'safety net' of the University, so I will gain lots of experience about being a producer in the real world. Blake Moore will also have a budget attached, so I will be able to develop my budgeting and money management over the course of the production. |
