PERSONAL STATEMENT
Hello, my name is Matthew Athroll and I study Film and Television Production at the University of Cumbria. I have had an interest and passion for the production of films and television for years. I was intrigued by how films and television were made and I wanted to see how this was done and get involved with the process myself. I had originally planned to start my career in media at A Levels, however, at the sixth form I went to, the course did not run which meant that I was unable to study media at that given time. After A Levels were finished, I applied to study Film and Television Production at the University of Cumbria where I am thoroughly enjoying the course and hope to continue on for many more years.
My favourite genre of film is Action Comedy as I enjoy the balance between the light-heartedness throughout the film and the action sequences throughout the film. My favourite action comedy film is Deadpool 2 as the jokes are very funny and the choreography of the fight scenes are well put together.
My favourite television genre is comedy, especially programmes that use dark humour like south park or family guy.
Projects and ideas:
Over the first year of University, I have been apart of a variety of projects. For example, a short horror film, a ten minute tv programme, interviews and script writing. These projects helped me gain more experience and learn the process in which a film could be made. I have enjoyed all of these projects and my favourite project to do was the short horror film. This was a short film about a killer murdering people in a forest to a piece of music. During that project I got to experience all of the roles in a film production: directing, acting, camera work, location scouting, which I enjoyed and has helped to further interest me in the media world. This particular project was inspired by a couple of pre existing media artifacts. The main inspiration coming from a scene from Guardians of the Galaxy 2, which is one of my favourite films, where the characters fight people to a piece of music that would not normally fit but inevitably does – which is something I would like to use in my future projects as I enjoy the irony and abstractness in films.
I enjoy making films and television programmes as I like to make people laugh and make jokes out of anything I can, so one day I hope that I can do that in a professional way through films or television programmes. I also enjoy making films as I like having an idea about something, creating it into a physical being and showing it to people. I thrive on the feeling of accomplishment after a project and that drives me to want to complete more projects and more complicated projects.
